WHAT IS A PAPERCUTTING?
The art of paper cutting, is a technique of illustrating by making intricate cuts rather than drawing lines. Paper cutting has a long and storied history spanning centuries and several different countries. The practice involves skillfully hand cutting paper with an x-acto knife, to create unique delicate pieces of art.
Light + Paper founder Ali, a self taught artist, creates the designs for all our products as a hand-cut original papercutting. Many of the originals take over 40 hours to cut by hand. Ali draws much of her inspiration from the organic beauty of science and nature.
Once the original piece is completed Ali scans it to digitally convert it. After a bit of computer magic it's ready to be reproduced as a unique piece of lasercut art - cut from either paper or wood (pictured below). All of our paper pieces and many of our wooden pieces are produced in our small Toronto studio. A selection of wooden items, pins and keychains are produced off-site.
